The National Energy Authority (NEA) proudly announces the appointment of Hon. Thomas Opa, MP, as the new Minister for Energy, effective from July 9, 2024. Minister Opa, representing the Kerema Open electorate, is a committed member of the Papua and Niugini Union (PANGU) party.

Elected to the 11th National Parliament in 2022,, Minister Opa has quickly risen within the ranks of the government. His dedication was recognized early on with his appointment as Vice Minister for Petroleum and Energy on September 12, 2022, as per National Gazette No.714. Additionally, he played a vital role as the Citizenship Matters Chair under the Marape-Rosso cabinet.

Now, as Minister for Energy, Hon. Thomas Opa steps into a crucial leadership position, tasked with driving the energy sector forward in Papua New Guinea. His leadership will be pivotal as NEA continues its mission to ensure that 70% of households have access to electricity by 2030, and ultimately, 100% by 2050.
